Workshop contents
This two-day workshop focuses on the behavior analytic (ABA) approach to teaching communication and other skills to children with autism and developmental disabilities. This approach is based on B.F. Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior and the research of Michael, Sundberg, Carbone, and others.
Day one of this workshop will focus on a description of the evidence-based methods to increasing speech sound production of children with autism who emit few vocal verbal responses and who have generally failed to develop an echoic repertoire.
Day two will include a discussion of a behavioral analysis of motivation and the role it plays in teaching language and social skills. The use of the conditioned transitive motivation operation (CMO-T) to teach mands for missing items and information and extensions of CMO-T research to language pragmatic skills and social skills will be discussed.
Video clips of teaching methods with children with autism will be used to illustrate and supplement the discussion. This workshop is suitable for behavior analysts, educators, teachers and parents.

Speaker
Laura Ferguson, M.A., Dip (Psych). BCBA
Laura is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst who received her M.A. in Psychology from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland and has also attained a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology. She has had the opportunity to work in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) in the UK, USA, Asia and Middle East. She began her career as a behavior therapist in Scotland in 2003 providing home and school-based instruction. In 2004, she trained at the Carbone Clinic in New York and since then has worked on several programs focusing on B.F. Skinnerʼs analysis of Verbal Behavior (VB). She provided instruction and supervision in home-based programs in Colorado, USA and also worked as a behavior therapist and supervisor with children in the home and in numerous International Schools in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. She consulted in Scotland after becoming a BCBA in 2012, implementing programs and training parents and behavior therapists in the dissemination of ABA/VB. When the Carbone Clinic- Dubai opened in September 2013, she assumed the role of “supervisor” and later was promoted to Lead BCBA.
